More tiger fabric love

I made myself another pair of bathers. I just couldn’t resist the tiger print (which is now available on Spoonflower for a limited time). I’ve already made a leotard for my daughter in the same fabric (which I failed miserably at withholding until Christmas) and I’ve been very happy with the quality of the sport lycra and print.

The front of my swimsuit is fully lined with nude swimsuit lining. The back and contrast binding is a limited edition solid print from the Fabric Fairy. The colour I used is no longer available, but colours come and go on this site. The quality is amazing though. It’s a beautiful weight fabric with an ultra smooth hand.

This swimsuit design is my own. I’m especially enamoured with the bottoms of the Splash swimsuit, so I based the bottom half of this swimsuit on them. In particular, I like the low leg cut and the forward position of the side seams. It gives a very flattering shape to the hips. The rest of the swimsuit was designed by the seat of my pants.

It’s not perfect. I could do with an extra cm in the body length. I’ll also add a little extra width to the bodice section and think about lowering the side strap attachment a smidgen. Otherwise, the suit feels really good on (and I’ve had enough experience with Speedos over the years to know what a comfy, functional swimsuit feels like). I’ll have no problem wearing these bathers for lap swimming. I’m quite sure that tigers swim really, really fast.

  2. can i ask how the fabric is holding up? I emailed spoonflower and they said that the fabric is not tested for salt/chlorine water, but i could use it if i wanted.

    1. Hi Jessica! I’ve mostly been using the sports lycra for gym leotards so we haven’t been dipping into chlorine or saltwater (yet! I made my bathers too late in the year to put it to actual use yet) However, I’ve just made my eldest a pair of swimmers for chirstmas though so they should get a workout soon. This fabric feels thicker and of better quality than other swimsuit fabrics I’ve used in the past – I’m actually quite impressed with the sports lycra. The print comes out a bit darker than it does in the jersey pique, which is good. It’s been washing very well, no fade or elasticity changes. I’m usually pretty good at identifying good swimsuit fabric – having spent a good 15yrs in it and not much else ;-). I’m pretty confident it will hold up well in the pool or sea.
